on latino body music vol ii sano continues to explore his musical heritage connecting the dots between tradition and news. for this record he picks up the champeta style that had its origin in the streets of colombia. the mix of repetitive rhythm patterns and chants performed by local legends like hernando hernandez is an integral part of the huge soundsytem culture that takes place in the streets of cartagena. by adding small hints to contemporary western club culture like a classic house piano, or an acid baseline sano reinterprets the tracks for our dancefloors without loosing any of the original hypnotic flavour. the early champeta dances were called therapy and seen as distraction from everyday problems. lets move!

an-2 and samos have turned the clock back to finish off a couple of sessions theyd recorded together years back. maxim samos is our keen friend and sophisticated guitar player from minsk, belarus that we know for years. his first appearance on theomatic was back in 2008 with space-rock tune alpha storm, which received lots of positive feedback and found its way to the prins thomas live at robert johnson compilation. as well as guitars, maxim can play almost any string instrument and, on one of his erstwhile trips to istanbul, he dropped by a music store, picked up a saz and immediately set it alight, blowing away the entire staff. after scoring a big discount, he came out, clutching it in his hands. an-2 commented on samos playing on the saz during one of his first visits to minsk, and immediately suggested cutting a track together something that took 10 years, but the wait’s been worth it. what weve got is surreal halal-acid-folk-disco affair, perfect for whirling dervishes or dancing the dhikr. the storys continued on the b-side, where were treated to a tale of trips in a gti, before finishing with a nordic saga about cold fronts coming at us from behind the polar circle.

blue hawaii is the songwriting, production, and dj project of raphaelle ‘ra’ standell and alexander ‘agor’ kerby. after some four years apart, the duo rekindled their creative flame in 2016 and begun writing music about an intimate relationship ra was experiencing mostly over instant messaging, sparking ideas about the meaning of closeness in our highly connected world. tenderness is a concept album which brings forth the challenges of handling relationships online. maintaining closeness over distance and a need for more tenderness between each other - both in real and virtual life - are important themes in the album s progression. the album draws upon influence from 90 s dance tracks and deep disco cuts, often mixed with ra’s acoustic guitar playing. it unfolds like a play and each song being supported by shorter interlude pieces: skits, phone calls, acoustic demos, real life samples and quiet left-turns.

there is a sense of urgency increasingly infecting the human condition, fragmenting our attention span, accelerating our needs and often influencing our motives when making creative decisions. the result is a lack of dynamics, there is no ebb or flow, its “go” time, all the time. electronic music is one of the clearest examples of a widening division between great art created in a deeply imaginative vaccum and the soulessly formulaic and branded product that serves the impatient masses. what draws the esp institute to benedikt frey is his ability to operate on the fringe, outside the constructs artists constantly channel themselves into - his art speaks a pure language that is realized by any means necessary, a process devised solely to articulate his own message, one delivered with patience, never rushed nor dictated by the outside world. artificial was written and produced over two years, tirelessly sculpted into a sequence abstract pieces that are fiercely independent but accumulate layers of meaning when collaged. it is electronic and rhythm-based, but never reliant on any prescribed instrumentation, arrangement or expecatation. this is our idea of well conceived and executed album, not simply a collection of tracks but a complex narrative that unfolds over peaks and valleys, pulling the listener into emotional corners before leaving a residual impression. some may describe music very well in words, but there is always something lost in translation - a story only the music itself can tell.

our hero, jo tongo (born joseph ekambi tongo mpondo) was born and raised in douala cameroon. in 1964 he headed off to paris to begin pharmaceutical studies. somewhere along the way the music in his soul eventually won out and he embarked on a life of music. in the latest of our series of funk experimentals lps we dig for the funk. not necessarily the artists greatest hits but most definitely the funkiest ear benders. we proudly compile together tracks from 1968 to 3 new brand new exclusive tracks from present day 2017. and yes, they all have the funk. in spades.

finally a fresh mcde is announced! new one from long time deep house/broken producer, pablo valentino... . its been four years since label co-founder pablo valentino became a daddy, and almost as old is the idea of him releasing a record on our imprint. so what makes more sense than to dedicate this record to hugo-joão, his son? on -my son s smile- we can hear a recording of hugo-joão s laughter over a mellow, summery house track that has been a big favorite of danilo over the years. with a little help from lyon producer patchworks, who played bass on the track, valentino pulls off one of his most sophisticated productions yet.

i try to perform as honestly as possible — the soundbite borrowed from late dancer dudley williams for this record s second track could have been uttered by the mole himself. it s this candor that has allowed us to bear witness to a very marked and very audible transition from his days as a producer in montreal to becoming a part of the berlin scene. and what we have here is one result of that very explicit sonic metamorphosis. de la planet is our dyslexic subject s third studio album, one that stays true to his ethos of weird above all in the best possible sense. and yet it feels like something distinctly new. tapping his enormous reservoir of vinyl and sampling the odd film have acted as complement to the jaw-dropping arsenal of synthesizers at de la plante s disposal—a battery of machines he s been quietly improving his skills on during the past few years. or not so quietly, perhaps. the man himself would probably say -i m coming out of the woodshed-, and go off on a tangent about sonny rollins and his saint of a wife. but that s a story for another sheet.

antique fragments ep is the third release of our kommuna tapes imprint. the a side starts with a quirky fast-paced track created by a mysterious producer named schematix in 1997. thinktank, an electro/breakbeat act who signed his first and unique ep only a few years later in 2000, takes us on a punchy yet dreamy techno journey. on the flip side, after schematix undusted his hardware to extract the stems for the occasion, wizard sergio moreira mastered the challenge of creating a slower and deeper version of the track, while upcoming madrid talent javier moreno closes the release with a bouncy acid burner. track by track, we build a kommuna of artists who share our insatiable appetite for music discovery, guided by a certain vision of the dancefloor: deep stripped-down grooves, sometimes challenging, always with character.

alpenglühen, the madrid-based monthly nights, focused in ambient techno, emerges in september,2014, inspired by the film -dogville- and the optical phenomenon happening when the last ray of sunshine slowly disappears over the mountains, now, with the moto -exploring the thin line between darkness and light-, alpenglühen, the label, is born, influenced by those sessions. the first installment is produced by the duo, pajaro dune. a young project formed by two well known talented producers from valencia, who gives us a promising kick off release. 4 highly crafted tracks which are somewhere between techno (in its deepest and atmospheric stage), contemporary music and impressionistic electronics. partially inspired on the research by konstantin batygin and michael e. brown on the evidence for a planet the size of uranus between 200 and 1000 au far away from the sun. the titles of the tracks are all but one real objects of our solar system whose movement is theoretically affected by the presence of a distant giant planet yet to be discovered.

making a debut appearance on our own invisible ep 6 compilation last year we re very happy to at last feature a full 4-track ep from the mysterious immaculate rivombo. again the music is filled with that signature sound of live african percussion and 303s but this time with additional thumb pianos, hypnotic vocals and spacey synth lines. purporting to be from burundi (for all we know this could be the product of an elaborate ruse emanating from berlin tbh) the enigmatic producer (he? she? they?) has once again excelled and produced an ep that manages somehow to sound uplifting and spiritual at the same time as it is deep, dark and dubby. whatever, the music s great and that s what matters. definitely one to watch out for. another great ep from invisible inc. trippy, far out sounds. my pick is b1.killer party tool!! nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.

chico buarque construcao revisited by l_cio is a beautiful debut project part of a doc series of releases combining classic brazilian names with doc artists and producers. l_cio (laercio schwantes) the man with the transverse flute known for some of the freshest and unique tracks coming out from brazil is behind this gemstone. increasingly building a legacy of fans following his live performances and recent releases on doc records (vazio, traffic, people talk, schwantes), this man is a non-stoppable 30 hours machine gun. on this long awaited 2-track limited edition vinyl release, l_cio and gui boratto kept the roots of this classic track construcao. however they added all the proper elements of a techno dance floor knockout. by inserting malicious baselines, flutes and strings they generated aggressive melodies while keeping all characteristics of this epic song. voted as the greatest brazilian song by rolling stones magazine, construcao was originaly recorded by chico buarque in 1971 with production by roberto menescal. released during military dictatorship, chico buarque criticizes the way of life of the brazilian workers, comparing them to machines. the song is known for its interchangeable last words, used as if they were pieces of a board game, as said by buarque. generatiions apart, construcao (l_cio & k_ri version) and construcao (l_cio & borattos deconstructed mix) are the first ever authorized remixes in over 45 years. l_cio the latest dance floor brazilian soldier, a menacing builder of beats completes an epic turnnig point by editing and lapidating a classic poetry. with a b side dub version beutifully crafted by label boss gui boratto, this limited edition pearl is finally here for our joy!

solar phenomena is a brand new label on an exciting astral crusade. the take-off pilot for our virgin mission is none other than decorated polish producer echoplex. one of the country’s first breakthrough international techno artists, his body of work dates back almost 20 years while often taking us 20.000 light years forward. this is no exception.

japan is our first collaboration. the ambient sounds on this record are fragments from our month-long stay in japan during spring 2015: hundreds of tokyo ravens in yoyogi park, an old song found in an old man s small shop in kyoto, the bird-like traffic signals in naha, okinawa, blending with the distorted voice of a man with a megaphone and a message... back in stockholm, these sounds became documentary elements in our music as well as sources for creating new sounds. the small, beautiful bowl we had brought home went to pieces, and the sonic character of the ceramic pieces turned into a delicate drone.

since our beginning, manny cuevas a.k.a. dj m-traxxx has been a big supporter of snuff trax. in return, we totally dig his amazing radio shows and podcasts. this man’s heart is beating for chicago house music and you can feel the impact on all of his productions. snuff trax is very happy to present a whole manny cuevas record: „thee jackin’ zone e.p.“ for „you’ll never know (twisted fantasy)“ manny invited the amazing dj and vocalist josh caffe. together they created a seductive tune that takes us back to the golden era of house. a truly irresistible affair. with the tracks „a matter defined (acid house)“ and „thee jackin zone“ manny captures the wild pulse of the dance floor. sincerely raw, that’s all we need.
